Sleeve gastrectomy with the daVinci robot

The principle of a sleeve gastrectomy is to reduce the volume of the stomach by removing the sac, or so-called great curvature of the stomach. After the operation, the stomach takes on an elongated sleeve shape, hence the name of the operation. After the operation, the volume of the stomach ranges from 80 to 180 ml, resulting in a decrease in the amount of food intake.

Among other things, the part of the stomach that is removed contains the area that produces the hormone Ghrelin, also known as the "hunger hormone". Under normal conditions Ghrelin acts on the central nervous system and causes a person to feel hungry. Removal of this endocrine area of the stomach, together with the reduction of its volume described above, allows patients to effectively lose weight without significant feelings of hunger or any discomfort.

It is important to note that during a sleeve gastroectomy all the natural valves of the stomach (sphincter of the cardiac sphincter, pylorus) are preserved, so that the physiology of digestion remains intact. The digestive process remains unchanged and proceeds as it did before the operation.

The result of gastric sleeve resection surgery is a comfortable weight loss, which occurs naturally by reducing the portions of food and significantly reducing feelings of hunger. The average weight loss during the first year after the operation is 30-50 kg. And with proper diet and movement, patients continue to lose weight until it returns to normal.

For patients who are highly obese and weigh more than 160 kg, a minimally invasive sleeve gastroectomy is also possible. The operation is more complex and lengthy for these patients. Surgeons and doctors must have considerable experience in gastroplasty. If patients follow the advice of their doctors after the operation, most of them retain the result for years to come.

All bariatric gastric reduction surgeries at St. Zdislava Hospital are performed using minimally invasive surgical techniques: laparoscopic or with the daVinci Robot system (2023). Svatý Zdislavská Hospital ranks among the leading hospitals in the Czech Republic in terms of the number of robotic surgical procedures performed.

Dr. Jaroslav Tvarůžek, MD is a certified and recommended surgeon on the American server of the daVinci (Intuitive Surgical) robot manufacturer. He has more than 3,500 robotic surgeries to his credit, including bariatric gastric reduction surgeries.

Advantages of surgery with the daVinci robot

  • The daVinci robot is the most effective and safest method of surgical treatment for obesity.
  • There is no disruption of natural digestion after surgery.
  • There is no blood loss during the operation.
  • Because the operation is done through four incisions (1 cm), the patient has no large stitches or severe pain.

YOUR HEALTH COMES FIRST

Our experience with endoscopic surgical treatment of prostatic adenoma suggests that early diagnosis and timely treatment can avoid complications and the development of prostate cancer. After transurethral resection of the prostate, patients recover quickly and return to their normal lifestyle.
