TURP - Transurethral resection of the prostate

Transurethral resection of the prostate is an endoscopic surgical procedure that is done through the urethra (urethra), without external incisions or sutures. This technique is used to treat adenoma of the prostate.

Prostate adenoma, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a benign mass in the prostate gland area. It should be noted that prostatitis and adenoma of the prostate are not the same disease. Prostatitis is an inflammatory disease and adenoma of the prostate is a benign tumor.

If diagnosed early, adenoma or prostatic hyperplasia can be treated well. There is no need to be afraid of the surgery, because even very old patients tolerate it very well. Timely TURP surgery avoids the removal of the prostate gland in the future.

Therefore, if surgery is recommended for you, there is no need to delay it. Contact the coordinators at St. Zdislava Hospital, who will help you arrange treatment at our clinic with the best specialists in urology. You can contact the coordinator at no extra cost by WhatsApp, Telegram, Viber or e-mail. You can also use the feedback form at the bottom of the page.

How TURP surgery is performed

Prostate TUR - transurethral resection of the prostate - is most commonly performed under epidural (or spinal) anaesthesia. An endoscope with a receptor and a camera is gently inserted through the urethra into the prostate area. Using the camera image and a bipolar electroloop, the doctor dissects the adenoma while sealing the blood vessels. The duration of transurethral resection (TUR) depends on the size of the adenoma and takes up to 1.5 hours maximum.

The removed tissue is removed through a resectoscope, after which it is sent for histological examination to make sure no malignant cells are present. After the operation, a catheter is inserted into the patient's bladder, through which the bladder is irrigated with physiological solution. The catheter is removed 1-2 days after the operation.

At St. Zdislava Hospital we use the most modern equipment for such operations. This combined with the surgeons' great experience in performing prostate TUR allows us to achieve stable positive statistics in the recovery of our patients.

The volume of urological surgeries performed by our team of surgeons makes us one of the biggest centres for robotic surgery in Central Europe. For our team, prostate surgery is a well-established practice. We perform more than 1,000 robotic daVinci surgeries each year at our centre, including 400 prostate surgeries.

Advantages of surgery with the daVinci robot

  • The daVinci robot is the most effective treatment for prostate adenoma.
  • Highest cure rate.
  • The operation allows natural urination and an erection.
  • There is no blood loss during the operation.
  • Because the operation is done through four incisions (1 cm), the patient has no large stitches or significant pain.
  • Unlike other treatment methods (radiation, chemotherapy, abdominal surgery, etc.) the da Vinci robot system surgery has the highest success rate in curing cancer completely, and has the highest survival rate in patients with malignant tumours.
